Pune: Persistent Systems announced today that it has reached carbon neutrality for its Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) a full year ahead of its target, covering the fiscal year 2023-2024.
The achievement has been independently verified by DNV Business Assurance India Private Limited, positioning Persistent as a leader in corporate sustainability.
In line with global climate initiatives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and efforts to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C, Persistent has committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
Persistent's carbon neutrality milestone was accomplished through a comprehensive carbon management plan focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy investments.
The company has installed wind and solar energy systems, reducing its carbon emissions by 42%. Currently, 39% of Persistent’s global energy comes from renewable sources, with 44% in India.
Its energy management initiatives include self-generating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and purchasing International RECs to power its leased and international facilities.
In addition to its renewable energy efforts, Persistent has implemented extensive waste recycling programs and water reuse systems, with 99% of its waste being recycled and 28.3% of treated wastewater being reused across its campuses. The company has also contributed to carbon sequestration by planting over 121,000 trees.
Persistent's Chief Operating Officer, Dhanashree Bhat, highlighted the importance of this achievement: “As environmental challenges intensify, Persistent recognizes the need to act responsibly.
Achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions is a key step in our journey towards net-zero by 2050. By aligning with global standards like the GHG Protocol and the Science-Based Targets Initiative, we ensure that our approach to sustainability is science-driven and impactful.”
Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers Services LLP, praised Persistent's commitment to sustainability, noting, “Persistent’s achievement of carbon neutrality is particularly significant in today’s global context, where environmental sustainability is a critical concern.
Their dedication to renewable energy and carbon offset programs reflects their long-term commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to global climate solutions.”
