#BingeChronicle: This weekend, Netflix and 'chills'!

We suggest you kick start this weekend with some chills!

Aditi Malewar

Do you remember the age and time when we would sit with our friends and family to share ghost stories? Even though scary plots have been a part of our lives in one way or the other, most are usually neutral about willfully watching horror movies. The common answer to the question, “do you watch horror movies?” Is usually, “…why?” But then, there are those as well who love the genre and enjoy a good gory, spine-chilling horror movie every once in a while.

With the weekend around the corner and Netflix having a decent collection of horror must-watches (if you are an admirer) we suggest you kick start this weekend with some chills! So if you are still into dimming the lights, drawing curtains, a night of gore and chills you should totally check out these movies this weekend!

The Invitation

One of the best horror movies on Netflix, this psychological thriller is about a man who accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife. Once at the party, things start going down at a very methodical pace. It is very engaging to watch Will (Logan Marshall-Green), suspecting his former wife and her current husband to have different plans for their guests in one night at a single location.

This is what David Sims wrote in his review for the movie, “It's simple stuff, but it's remarkably effective, working to a sinister climax that largely pays off after 90 minutes of build-up.” He wasn’t wrong, you know!

This is a perfect watch for a Saturday evening!

IMDb rating: 6.6

Director: Karyn Kusama

Starring: Logan Marshall-Green, Michiel Huisman, and Emayatzy Corinealdi, among others

Insidious

If you are one of us, who doesn’t enjoy a good horror flick, don’t watch this. Insidious is one of those movies that you watch with your eyes closed! The movie is about a family, who has recently moved into a new house (it’s always the new house!), that is trying to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in another realm called ‘The Further’.

But the movie is, as aptly written by Philip French, ‘A supernatural horror flick by and for horror buffs.’

IMDb rating: 6.8

Director: James Wan

Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins, among others

Veronica

Well, this movie is easily dubbed as the “scariest movie ever”. The film is set in Madrid, 1991. Everything goes down south after a teen girl plays Ouija with two classmates. She eventually is overwhelmed by an evil supernatural force. Even though the plot is clichéd, ‘some one did some thing and now they are possessed’, it still gives you chills.

In fact, Jonathan Holland wrote that the film was, “Aided by some great child performances, plenty of stylistic chutzpah and a strong sense of place, [Plaza] makes it work...” Now that’s a great motivation to check out the movies this weekend!

IMDb rating: 6.2

Director: Paco Plaza

Starring: Sandra Escacena, Bruna González, and Claudia Placer, among others

Mama

This is one of the rare horror movies which everyone (with a little patience) would enjoy. So this movies is about a young couple that takes in their two nieces. The problems begin when an over-possessive supernatural entity have to share the kids with human adults.

Despite being a supernatural horror, this film has a touch of humanity to it (you’ll know when and if you watch it). In the movie’s review, Manohla Dargis wrote, “Instead of delivering buckets of guts and gore, this ghost story offers a strong sense of time and place, along with the kind of niceties that don't often figure into horror flicks ...”

IMDb rating: 6.2

Director: Andy Muschietti

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Megan Charpentier, among others

The Others

This supernatural psychological horror film keeps you on the edge till the end. This is also one of the movies that people like us watch with our eyes closed! The movie is about a lady who lives in her old family house with her two photosensitive children. While staying there she gets convinced that there are ‘others’ in her home and that it is haunted.

Applauding its brilliant plot, acting and direction, Peter Travers wrote in his review, “When it comes to turning the screws of psychological terror, Amenebar is an expert technician.”

IMDb rating: 7.6

Director: Alejandro Amenábar

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston, and Fionnula Flanagan, among others

May you have a spooky weekend!
