The Manvat Murders web series on Sony Liv delves into one of Maharashtra’s most gruesome and shocking real-life cases.
Directed by Ashish Bende, the series is based on the infamous Manvat murders that occurred between 1972 and 1973 in Parbhani district. This eight-part series offers a gritty and disturbing portrayal of human sacrifices driven by blind faith and the desire for a male heir, all under the influence of a spiritual leader.
The victims, mostly young girls, women, and even a young boy, were sacrificed following the orders of a Janata, who convinced locals to commit these heinous acts.
The web series follows the character of Ramakant Kulkarni, the sharp police officer who cracked the case, portrayed brilliantly by Ashutosh Gowariker.
Makarand Anaspure as Uttamrao Barhate, Sonali Kulkarni as Rukmini Barhate, and Saie Tamhankar as Samindri, all deliver stellar performances. Despite his brief screen time, Kishor Kadam also makes a lasting impact in the final episode.
A Story of Two Superstitions and Innocent Lives Lost
The murders were driven by two main superstitions: the desire for a son and the belief in hidden treasure. As the brutal killings unfolded, the police found themselves racing against time to stop the carnage.
Through meticulous investigation, Ramakant Kulkarni unearths the truth, bringing the killers to justice. The series portrays the challenges faced by the police in navigating local politics, caste dynamics, and societal pressures while trying to solve the case.
Powerful Performances and Gripping Storytelling
The strength of Manvat Murders lies in its storytelling and performances. The narrative, told through Ramakant Kulkarni’s perspective, is both engaging and deeply unsettling.
Saie Tamhankar's role as Samindri is particularly noteworthy; her commanding presence from her very first scene leaves a strong impression on the viewer.
Ashutosh Gowariker also shines in his portrayal of the determined police officer, while Makarand Anaspure and Sonali Kulkarni showcase their acting prowess with authentic performances.
