Earlier this month, Hollywood's power couple Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas took to Instagram to announce that they would be announcing Oscar 2021 nominations. In a cute video shared by Priyanka, the actress wondered if she could do the honours all by herself, and while we would’ve loved that, we certainly enjoyed watching the couple revealing the Academy Award nominations together!
Diversity in Oscar 2021
Announced on Monday, nominations for Oscars 2021, like BAFTA, are considered to be one of the most diverse with nine of the 20 acting nominees belonging to various ethnic backgrounds. After the all-white acting nominees fiasco in 2015 and 16, the Academy has been aggressively trying to achieve a diverse pool of members. The nominations for the said years, particularly, came under a scanner since, at the time, Hollywood was dodging criticism for not promoting diversity in the industry sufficiently.
This year’s nomination, thankfully, painted a more vibrant picture with actors like Steven Yeun, Riz Ahmed and Yuh-Jung Youn, among others in the nomination list. It’s also interesting to note, that this year, the majority of nominations in the best actor category are not white.
According to a report in Variety, on the same, the Academy has implemented significant changes following the #OscarsSoWhite scandals in the earlier years. In the Oscars, the numbers of women members have doubled from 25% in 2015 to 33% in 2020. While members from racial and ethnic minorities have nearly tripled from 10% in 2015 to 19% in 2020.
2021 the year of firsts for the Academy
One could say that the nominations of the year 2021 have set a precedent for the future. There are a couple of notable firsts like the first time two actors of Asian origin were nominated in the best actor category - Steven Yeun for Minari and Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal.
Another first, this year has been that two women have nominated in the directing category - Chloe Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.
Since we already pointed out the diversity in this year’s members, it’s also the first time that an all-Black producing team has been nominated for the best picture category. For their work on Judas and the Black Messiah, producers Shaka King, Ryan Coogler and Charles D King have been recognized.
Moment of pride
It was particularly ‘special’ for Priyanka to announce the nomination of writer-director Ramin Bahrani for her film The White Tiger in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. The Adarsh Gourav-starrer has notably made its way to the BAFTA nominations as well. ‘Proud’ Priyanka took to Instagram to share her happiness with her fans. She posted the list of nominations under the said category and wrote, ‘We just got nominated for an Oscar! Congratulations Ramin and team #TheWhiteTiger. Somehow announcing the nomination myself made it so much more special. So so proud (sic)’.
