Accidents on Pune-Mumbai Expressway Rise Despite Stricter Regulations

Violations such as speeding, lane cutting, improper overtaking, reckless driving, failure to use seat belts, have contributed to recent increase in accidents.

Pune: Despite the implementation of stricter traffic regulations on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, the number of accidents has increased. In the last two weeks alone, three accidents were reported within Pune’s jurisdiction, resulting in two fatalities and 35 injuries.

To combat the rising number of accidents and ensure compliance with traffic rules, authorities have intensified punitive measures. High-capacity CCTV cameras have been installed at various identified danger zones along the expressway.

These cameras are linked to a special control room located in Kusgaon, providing real-time updates on road activities. Any violations recorded are immediately reported to the RTO (Regional Transport Office) for appropriate action.

However, despite these measures, some drivers continue to ignore traffic rules, leading to severe consequences.

Violations such as speeding, lane cutting, improper overtaking, reckless driving, failure to use seat belts, and inadequate vehicle maintenance have all contributed to the recent increase in accidents.

In one incident near Devale, a private bus collided with a truck after the driver lost control of the vehicle, injuring 23 passengers. In another accident, a tempo overturned near the Kamshet tunnel around 4 PM on Saturday, causing the death of one person and leaving two others critically injured.

On Sunday morning, at approximately 3:30 AM, an ST bus lost control and rear-ended a truck near Baur, resulting in one death and injuries to nine passengers.

These incidents highlight that despite stricter traffic enforcement, driver negligence and non-compliance with rules remain significant issues on the expressway.
