Pune: Residents of Mohan Nagar, Kalbhornagar, and Indiranagar in Akurdi have long faced frequent power outages. In response to recent protests at the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL/Mahavitaran) office by affected residents, the power distribution authority has initiated a series of corrective measures.

Under the Revised Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Mahavitaran is now fast-tracking several upgrades to enhance power reliability and quality.

The planned improvements include the separation of high-tension power lines, installation of new transformers, and capacity upgrades for existing ones. Additionally, outdated low-tension power lines are set to be replaced, and aerial bundled cables will be installed to improve power safety.

From the district planning committee's funds, the transformer at Chinchwad Station, currently rated at 315 kVA, will be upgraded to 615 kVA.

New 200 kVA transformers will be installed at Mohan Nagar and Ashtavinayak. The replacement of old low-tension power lines in these areas has also been proposed.

Currently, Mahavitaran has replaced 120 meters of underground low-tension cable from the transformer to customer homes under maintenance and repair, with another 120 meters of replacement work underway.

According to MSEDCL officials, during the heavy rain-like downpours from July 24 to 25, 2024, there were disruptions to the power supply in the Akurdi area.

Additionally, Mahavitaran has permanently disconnected the power supply for 125 customers due to arrears amounting to around ten lakh rupees in electricity bills. Unauthorized power usage figures have also been periodically removed through campaigns.
