Pune: In an effort to make the upcoming elections more accessible to all, a special helpline has been launched by the election branch of the District Collector’s office, exclusively for differently-abled voters from the hearing-impaired community.

This initiative aims to provide seamless support for hearing-impaired voters regarding their polling stations and offer step-by-step guidance on how to use the electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The helpline number 9226363002 will allow voters to reach out for assistance through a video call. This feature is especially designed for the hearing-impaired, ensuring that they can receive clear and accurate information via sign language.

The district authorities have gone a step further by appointing two teachers from a local school for the hearing-impaired who are proficient in sign language to provide assistance.

These teachers will be stationed at the election branch of the District Collector’s office from 9:45 AM to 6:15 PM, offering real-time support to ensure that hearing-impaired voters can confidently exercise their right to vote.

Deputy District Election Officer Meenal Kalaskar emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, “We want to ensure that every voter, regardless of their abilities, has access to complete information and support for voting.”

The helpline is expected to bridge communication gaps and make the voting process more inclusive for the hearing-impaired community. This move is part of a broader effort to make elections accessible to all categories of differently-abled voters.

The initiative has been praised as a step forward in promoting an inclusive democracy where everyone can participate.

Hearing-impaired voters are encouraged to make use of this service via video calls, ensuring they are well-prepared and informed on the day of voting.
