Pune has experienced a record-breaking rainfall in August 2024, surpassing the city’s average by more than double. Normally, the city receives an average of 142.9 mm of rain during this month.

This year, however, the rainfall has been exceptionally high, setting a new record for August from 2013 to 2024.

Meteorologist Dr. S. D. Sanap revealed that the city's usual monsoon pattern includes an average of 166.3 mm of rain in June, 180.1 mm in July, and 142.9 mm in August, totaling an average of 489.3 mm for the three-month monsoon season.

This year, the total recorded rainfall has soared to 919.7 mm. Specifically, Pune received 252 mm of rain in June, 364.7 mm in July, and 303 mm by August 30, accumulating to the unprecedented total.

The extraordinary rainfall this year is attributed to several key factors. A persistent low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal continuously formed, creating conducive conditions for enhanced monsoon activity.

Additionally, a low-pressure belt remained active along the state’s coastline for most of the monsoon season, further intensifying the rainfall.

Dr. Sanap explained that these meteorological conditions led to the city experiencing more than double the average rainfall for August. The high rainfall has been a notable deviation from the norm and has significantly impacted the region.

The meteorological department is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates on any further developments. In the meantime, Pune residents are advised to stay alert to weather advisories and prepare for any potential impacts resulting from the intense monsoon conditions.
