Baramati Assembly Seat: Ajit Pawar Faces Potential Challenge From Within Family

Salil Urunkar

Pune: The upcoming assembly election in Baramati, a stronghold of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is set to determine which faction of the Pawar family will dominate following the party’s split.

Both factions are appealing emotionally to the voters. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar may face a challenge from his nephew, Yugendra Pawar, making it a high-stakes battle within the family.

With voting scheduled for November 20 and the counting on November 23, the election has become a focal point. The veteran leader Sharad Pawar is expected to present a strong challenge, indicating that for the first time, Ajit Pawar could face opposition from his own family members.

The aim appears to be to keep Ajit Pawar’s efforts concentrated in Baramati. Ajit Pawar is likely to emphasize the development projects he has undertaken in the region over the past five years.

Election Issues

In Baramati, water scarcity is expected to be a major issue in the elections. Additionally, rising crime, unemployment, and corruption may be highlighted by Yugendra Pawar during his campaign.

On the other hand, Ajit Pawar is expected to campaign by emphasizing the development work done in the last five years and the ₹8,500 crore allocated to Baramati, presenting it as a significant achievement.

The election will also serve as a test for the split NCP factions. It remains to be seen if Sharad Pawar introduces a surprise candidate at the last moment, which has become a topic of intense speculation.
