Pune: Investigations have revealed that the main accused in the Bopdev ghat gang-rape case tried to mislead the police by giving false names of himself and the absconding accused.
The father of the accused Shoaib alias Akhtar Babu Sheikh, identified as Jamal Lakhpati, tried to mislead the police by giving a false name and said that the absconding accomplice's name was Bapya alias Somnath Yadav, but his original name was Bapya alias Suraj Dashrath Gosavi.
The accused Shoaib alias Akhtar Babu Shaikh (27), a resident of Adarshnagar, Mantarwadi, Uruli Devachi, and Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanojia (20), a resident of Holevasti, Undri, who are in judicial custody in Yerawada jail, were detained by the police on Monday night after they found that the accused were misleading.
He was produced before the court of First Class Judicial Magistrate A A Kulkarni in Wanawadi on Tuesday. The accused were earlier sent to judicial custody in Yerawada jail while retaining their rights to police custody.
The investigation into this crime is sensitive and extensive in nature. Therefore, the accused need to be interrogated in police custody," the public prosecutor Amrapali Kasture argued.
The court remanded the accused in police custody till November 8. The police told the court that they want to interrogate the two accused together and find out how they have committed the crime and there is a strong possibility that the accused committed such crimes in rural Pune.
Police will take Akhtar Shaikh to his native Latur and Nagpur to verify his Aadhaar card and birth certificate. He is aware of the absconding accused Bapya alias Suraj Gosavi.
Besides, where did the three accused come from before committing the crime and where did they go after committing the crime? Akhtar Shaikh and Chandra Kumar Kanojia will be taken before the court and examined by the witnesses there, the police told the court.
