Pune: In a theft incident at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), two CCTV cameras and a Wi-Fi router were stolen from the examination center used for learner’s license tests.
The theft was discovered on Monday (October 14) morning, causing disruption for candidates who had come for their scheduled learner’s license tests.
The RTO administration quickly responded by installing an alternative router around 11 a.m., allowing the Wi-Fi system to be restored and work to resume.
The theft was noticed as soon as the office opened on Monday morning. The process of issuing learner’s licenses typically starts at 8:30 a.m., with candidates arriving before the first slot begins.
However, due to the missing Wi-Fi router, the system was unable to upload photos and other necessary information. This led to a delay in the license issuance process, frustrating the waiting candidates.
Upon investigating the issue, RTO staff discovered that not only the Wi-Fi router but also two CCTV cameras had been stolen. Initially, staff informed candidates that the learner’s license processing would be postponed due to "technical issues."
However, after the matter was escalated to senior officials, an alternative router was arranged, and work resumed shortly thereafter.
Security Concerns at Pune RTO
The incident has raised concerns about security at the Pune RTO. Hundreds of vehicles, seized in various legal cases, are left unguarded in the office compound, gathering dust. These include two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
Despite being held in RTO custody, many of these vehicles have already been vandalized, with parts such as tires and batteries stolen. If thefts can occur inside the RTO office itself, the security of vehicles left outdoors is in serious question. Furthermore, the presence of security guards in the office premises has been inconsistent.
Archana Gaikwad, Regional Transport Officer, Pune said, "A police complaint has been filed regarding the stolen CCTV cameras and router. In order to prevent further disruptions, the RTO acted swiftly by installing a replacement router to resume the learner’s license operations."
