CID to Investigate Death of Theft Suspect in Pune Police Custody

Pune: A 47-year-old man arrested on theft charges, passed away while receiving medical treatment after fainting in the custody of Vishrambaug Police Station. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has prompted the transfer of the investigation to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The deceased has been identified as Sachin Ashok Gaikwad (aged 47, resident of Mundhwa). According to the police, Gaikwad and Manohar Ramesh Mane (aged 35) were arrested by Parvati Police for theft.

After a medical examination, they were taken into custody on July 7th. They were then held at the Vishrambaug-Faraskhana Police Station lockup. The court had ordered their custody until August 10th.

On the evening of August 9th, Gaikwad fainted in the lockup. The police on duty immediately informed senior officers and rushed him to Sassoon Hospital's Intensive Care Unit in an ambulance.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Gaikwad died due to a cerebral hemorrhage. On Saturday, August 10th, Gaikwad underwent surgery but succumbed to his condition during treatment in the evening.

Gaikwad's family was aware of his critical condition. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Sambhaji Kadam.

Recently, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission had ordered Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family of Vishal Dhende, who died after being thrashed by a constable at Ahmednagar station in a mobile theft case, citing custodial violence.
