Pune: In a recent notification, the central government has renamed the Civil Court Metro Station to 'District Court, Pune'. The implementation of this change is expected soon.

This development comes after persistent efforts by the Pune Bar Association, the leading body of lawyers in the district, which had been advocating for this change.

When the metro service was launched in Pune, the station at Shivajinagar Court was named Civil Court, a decision that puzzled many citizens. The Shivajinagar District Court handles a variety of cases including civil, criminal, motor accident claims, and family matters, leading to questions about the appropriateness of the name Civil Court.

This caused confusion among citizens and dissatisfaction among lawyers, as it raised doubts about whether the Civil and Sessions Courts were the same or different.

Due to these concerns, there were widespread demands from both the legal community and the public for a name change. The Pune Bar Association took the lead in following up on this issue, and their efforts have now borne fruit.

The court in question is officially known as the Shivajinagar District and Sessions Court, but the station's name as Civil Court created confusion.

"The name Civil Court suggested a limited jurisdiction, which was misleading. The new name, District Court, Pune, more accurately reflects the range of cases handled here," stated Adv. Santosh Khamkar, President of the Pune Bar Association.

"This decision is welcome. The District and Sessions Court at Shivajinagar deals with criminal, civil, small cause, family, and motor accident claims, among other types of cases.

The previous name, Civil Court, implied a restricted scope, which was inaccurate. The new name, District Court, Pune, is more comprehensive and appropriate," commented Adv. Abhishek Hargane, a criminal law practitioner.

The renaming of the metro station is expected to alleviate confusion and better represent the comprehensive nature of the court's functions to the public.
