Pune: Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, successfully performed a complex spinal surgery on a 19-year-old female from Yemen, addressing her severe congenital kyphoscoliosis—a spinal deformity that hindered her basic daily functions and caused extreme discomfort.

Admitted on September 12, 2024, the patient faced debilitating symptoms, including difficulty with movement and severe back pain, which were progressively worsening.

Congenital kyphoscoliosis is a birth defect involving abnormal vertebral development that, as it progresses, results in an unusually curved spine.

This patient’s condition had compressed her spinal cord, resulting in a hunched appearance and significantly decreased quality of life, and without intervention, her condition was expected to lead to paralysis.

“This case was particularly challenging due to the advanced spinal deformity,” stated Dr. Rahul Chaudhari, Consultant Spine Surgeon at Manipal Hospital, Baner.

“Our main objective was to realign the spine to ensure stability and protect the spinal cord from damage. Such surgeries demand extreme precision, as even a small error could lead to irreversible consequences such as permanent paralysis.”

The hospital’s medical team employed advanced intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) and surgical navigation systems, which allowed real-time spinal cord monitoring and aided the doctors in making precise adjustments to the spine while minimizing the risk of injury.

Dr. Chaudhari noted, “By carefully correcting the spinal structure, we could reduce the abnormal curvature and relieve the compressed spinal cord. Thanks to advanced technology, we could achieve these life-altering results safely. The patient is now experiencing improved mobility and a significantly better quality of life.”

Anand Mote, Cluster Director at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, commented, “At Manipal Hospital Baner, Pune, our team remains dedicated to providing high-quality care through advanced technology and specialized expertise.

This case of complex kyphoscoliosis surgery is a testament to our commitment to transforming lives and serving both local and international patients.”

The surgery was led by Dr. Rahul Chaudhari, supported by Dr. Ashish Pathak, Consultant Anesthetist, and a team of skilled professionals. Neuroanesthesia, guided by continuous IONM, was critical to ensuring a smooth procedure and a successful outcome.
