Biggest single-day spike globally: India records more than 3 lakh COVID-19 cases

With 2,104 deaths on Wednesday, India also recorded its highest single-day spike in the death rate so far.

India recorded more than 3 lakh new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day tally in the world ever. The country reported 3,15,735 fresh infection cases in the last 24 hours. No country has recorded more cases than this figure in a single day. Before this, the USA saw the highest single-day spike in cases on January 8, 2021, when it recorded 3,13, 310 cases in a day.

India also saw the second consecutive day when the country has registered over 2,000 deaths in a single day. With 2,104 deaths on Wednesday, India recorded its highest single-day spike so far.

Among the worst affected states in the country, Maharashtra reported 67, 468 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. While Uttar Pradesh saw 33,106 new cases, Delhi recorded 24, 638 new COVID-19 cases. Karnataka reported another biggest single-day spike of 23,558 new Covid-19 cases while Kerala recorded 22,414 fresh new cases in the last 24 hours.

On the vaccination front, 2.11 lakh people were inoculated on Wednesday in the country. Since the vaccination drive against COVID-19 was kicked off in India on January 16, over 132.2 million people have received at least one of the two doses of vaccine.

In the last 24 hours, 178,841 people recovered from the COVID-19 disease. The tally of recovered COVID-19 cases has now reached 13,454,880. There are currently 2,291,428 active cases of coronavirus in India.

The second wave of COVID-19 in India has been very aggressive and fast-spreading. The country has overtaken Brazil and the US in the number of daily cases. Several states have imposed curfews and strict restrictions amid shortages of hospital beds, oxygen and medicines.
