COVID-19: First time since October, Maharashtra reports more than 6,000 cases in a day

For the first time since October, Maharashtra has reported more than 6,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day, indication a worsening pandemic situation.

Akola division, which consists of Akola, Amravati, and Yavatmal districts, has reported a sudden spurt in new cases. Since Feb 12, these three districts have 6,697 new cases, taking the overall tally from 76,207 to 82,904 in just eight days.

The state government had informed earlier that no foreign strain of coronavirus has been found in genome sequencing of samples from Yavatmal and Amravati.

In the Pune district, new infections have touched 1.015, and six deaths were reported on Friday, taking the total tally to 9,171 in the district.

On Friday, Mumbai city reported 823 fresh new cases, taking the tally of cases to 3,17,310 and the death toll to 11,437. Mumbai city and surrounding region is the biggest contributor to COVID-19 cases.

In Maharashtra, the total number of positive cases is 20,87,632. While the state has reported 51,713 so far, the number of active cases is 45,956
