COVID-19 India: Maharashtra alone contributing nearly 60 per cent of total cases

New Delhi: According to Union health ministry data released on Wednesday, 71 per cent of the active COVID-19 cases in India in the last 24 hours came from Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka and Gujarat. Maharashtra, which is witnessing a sudden spike, contributed 60 per cent to active cases.

India reported 28,903 cases of the COVID-19 on Tuesday, of which 17,864 cases were reported from Maharashtra. More than 1.14 crore people have been found infected India till date, while the number of active cases in the nation has gone over 2.34 lakh. At least 188 deaths were reported on Tuesday, with 87 deaths recorded from Maharashtra.

According to the Health Ministry, 15 states/UTs have not reported any COVID-19 deaths in last 24 hours. These are Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Nagaland, Tripura, Ladakh, Manipur, Mizoram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Arunachal Pradesh.

The districts of Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai have over 12,000 active COVID-19 cases each, contributing the maximum to the active caseload total of the country, which on Tuesday jumped 2.2 lakh. In the last week of February, India's active caseload was lower than 1.5 lakh.

VACCINE DOSES IN MAHARASHTRA

A record 2,64,897 people received COVID-19 vaccines in Maharashtra on Tuesday, according to the state health department. This was the highest number of people vaccinated in a day in Maharashtra since the vaccination drive started in January. The total of those who have received vaccine now stands at 31,33,612.

While Maharashtra recorded a maximum number of vaccinations, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday requested the Centre to provide 2.2 crore vaccine doses with supply at 20 lakh each week.
