Pune: The Deccan Police Cyber Squad has recovered 30 stolen mobile phones valued at ₹5.5 lakh from various locations, marking a successful outcome in the fight against mobile theft.

Utilizing the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system, a tracking service provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the police were able to trace and retrieve the stolen devices.

The CEIR system, which allows for deactivation and tracking of stolen or lost phones, was instrumental in the investigation.

The system enables victims to deactivate missing devices by reporting them to the police, making it an effective tool for police forces across India in combating mobile theft.

Led by Senior Inspector Girisha Nimbalkar and Crime Inspector Prasad Raut, along with Constables Uma Palve, Saroja Devar, and Supriya Sonawane, the Deccan Police Cyber Squad used the CEIR system to monitor several stolen phone numbers that appeared active.

Through extensive data collection, they tracked down users in various districts. Within a month, the squad had successfully seized 30 devices worth ₹5.5 lakh from these locations.

The initiative demonstrates the efficiency of the CEIR system in tackling mobile theft and highlights the proactive approach of the Deccan Police in leveraging technology to enhance public safety.

In a separate incident recently reported, Chandan Nagar Police had arrested four individuals believed to be part of a gang operating out of Mumbai and Hyderabad in connection with the theft. The thieves had exploited the crowd during a live concert by British singer Alan Walker in Kharadi, and managed to steal 36 mobile phones.
