Pune: The conclusion of the monsoon season has brought some relief to Pune, as the number of dengue cases in the city has steadily decreased over the past month.

According to data from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), September witnessed the peak of dengue infections this year, with 168 cases reported. The number dropped to 63 in October, and only 13 cases have been identified so far in November.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer, confirmed that the overall dengue count for the year has reached 370.

"With the reduction in water stagnation, the spread of dengue is expected to decline further," Dr. Dighe stated. He also highlighted efforts to curb mosquito breeding, resulting in the collection of ₹7.95 lakh in fines from violators.

Chikungunya Cases Surge

However, while dengue cases are on the decline, chikungunya has emerged as a growing concern.

A total of 462 cases have been reported in Pune this year, with September accounting for the highest number at 225 cases, followed by October with 137 cases. Chikungunya cases have surpassed dengue infections in several months, raising alarms for public health authorities.

PMC has intensified its surveillance and awareness campaigns to address the spike in chikungunya cases and ensure timely action against mosquito breeding in vulnerable areas.
