Pune: With the onset of the monsoon, Pune has seen a rise in diseases caused by mosquitoes. Changes in temperature and the arrival of the monsoon have increased the risk of illnesses.

Stagnant and contaminated water has proven to be hazardous, serving as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The Aedes aegypti mosquito species is responsible for spreading the dengue virus, posing a significant threat to newborns, according to medical experts.

Neonatologist Dr. Jayant Khandare stated, “In adults, dengue symptoms are often mild or sometimes not apparent at all. However, dengue is most serious and dangerous for newborns compared to other age groups. Research has shown that babies under one year of age are at a higher risk of fatal outcomes due to dengue.”

Parents should not ignore symptoms such as sudden fever, severe headache, eye pain, joint and muscle pain, and skin rashes.

If symptoms become more severe, including fatigue, body swelling, persistent vomiting, and severe abdominal pain, it may indicate the progression to severe dengue hemorrhagic fever, which involves heavy bleeding and increased risk to vital organs. Immediate medical attention is required in such cases, Dr. Khandare emphasized.

Dr. Jayant Khandare, Neonatologist also mentioned that “some simple yet effective measures can prevent dengue.” Ensuring no stagnant water near homes, using mosquito repellents and nets, and dressing children in full-body covering clothing are essential precautions.

"It is equally important to educate children about the increasing risk of dengue and preventive measures. During the monsoon, cases of dengue, typhoid, and malaria are on the rise. Therefore, if children develop a fever, consulting a pediatrician promptly is advised."
