Pune: The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) located near the scenic Khadakwasla Lake, celebrated its 13th convocation, marking another milestone in its journey as a premier academic institution under the Ministry of Defence.
Specializing in advanced research and education in engineering and science, DIAT offers M.Tech, M.Sc, and Ph.D. programs aimed at strengthening national security and promoting self-reliance.
DIAT is at the forefront of developing indigenous defence technologies in a wide range of critical fields, including Advanced Sensing, Radar Technology, Data Science, Quantum Communications, Energy and Environmental Systems, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Laser and Optical Systems, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and Weapon Systems.
The institute collaborates closely with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other defence services to enhance India’s technological capabilities.
From July 2024, DIAT has also introduced an M.Tech program in Systems Engineering specifically designed for L&T Defence Officers.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, Ministry of Defence, graced the convocation as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Dr. BHVS Narayana Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of DIAT, along with distinguished guests such as Rear Admiral N. D'souza, Commandant of MILIT; Prof. Sunil S. Bhagwat, Director of IISER Pune; and Prateek Kishore, Director General (ACE). Also in attendance were lab directors from HEMRL, ARDE, and R&DE Engineering, Pune.
During the ceremony, a total of 271 degrees were conferred, including 225 M.Tech, 22 M.Sc, 1 MS (by Research), and 23 Ph.D. degrees. Additionally, 17 students were awarded Gold Medals for their academic excellence.
Following the convocation, attendees were treated to laboratory demonstrations showcasing the institute’s cutting-edge research in alignment with the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India).
Dr. Kamat lauded DIAT’s research contributions, emphasizing the institute's role in advancing India's defence technology and its impact on empowering the country’s youth.
He encouraged graduates, including serving officers and civilian students, to leverage futuristic technologies in their careers to further national progress.
Dr. Kamat also urged research scholars to contribute towards achieving the nation's goal of self-reliance, urging faculty and students to collaborate and innovate for future success.
In closing, Dr. Kamat extended his gratitude and appreciation to the DIAT community for their efforts in making the convocation a grand success, highlighting the institute’s pivotal role in shaping India’s defence and technological landscape.
