Pune: Prominent Indian scientist Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar recently shared his personal connection with Ratan Tata, reflecting on how the Tata Trust played a crucial role in his educational journey.

Speaking at an event, Dr. Mashelkar recalled his early academic achievement when he ranked 11th in the 1960 board exams for 10th grade.

Following this, he was awarded a monthly scholarship of ₹60 from the Tata Trust, which enabled him to pursue his studies in chemical engineering. He credited the scholarship for his success in becoming a renowned scientist.

Dr. Mashelkar highlighted the deeper qualities of Ratan Tata, noting that he was not just a remarkable industrialist, but also an individual of great character.

"He possessed humility, politeness, and a strong passion for his work," Mashelkar said, further adding that Tata embodied the philosophy of 'simple living and high thinking.'

In another significant moment, both Mashelkar and Tata were honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award on March 30, 2000, by the then-President of India, K. R. Narayanan.

As a member of the board of directors, Mashelkar observed that Tata was never primarily focused on profits, but on the welfare of people.

"The 'T' in Tata stands for 'Trust,'" Mashelkar remarked, pointing out how Tata's leadership increased the company's revenue 40 times and profits 50 times during his tenure. Under Ratan Tata's leadership, the company left an indelible mark on the global stage.
