Pune: The prices of dried peas, essential for popular dishes like pav bhaji and matar paneer, have surged in Pune due to reduced production and limited supply.

Currently, dried peas are being sold at ₹150-160 per kilogram in the wholesale market, nearly double the price from last year. In retail markets, the prices have climbed to ₹180-200 per kilogram.

"These prices are expected to remain steady for the next four to five months. Once the fresh green pea season begins, prices should decrease," said Nishant Choradia, a trader from Market Yard.

Dried peas are primarily produced in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Last year, insufficient rainfall led to a decline in production. As a result, the supply to the processing industry decreased, causing a shortage in the market.

Currently, around 200 sacks, each weighing 30 kilograms, are arriving in the market daily. Last year, this number was between 500 to 600 sacks. The current inflow has dropped by more than half, while demand remains high.

Reasons for the Surge in Dried Green Pea Prices

  • Decrease in domestic production due to erratic weather conditions.

  • The Central Government's ban on green pea imports.

  • Increased demand for dried peas due to the unavailability of fresh peas.

  • Scarcity of high-quality peas in the market.

"Currently, the stock of green peas in the country is depleting, leading to the sale of remaining stocks from nearby villages. The new harvest of peas is expected to arrive in the market by December.

If the Central Government lifts the import ban before then, prices may decrease. Otherwise, wholesale prices could reach ₹200 per kilogram," said Vijay Rathod, a dried pea trader from Market Yard.
