Pune: With Dussehra just around the corner, the flower market in Pune's Market Yard is witnessing a surge in flower supply and demand. Flowers such as marigolds, chrysanthemums, jasmine, and chameli have been arriving in large quantities to meet the growing demand during the festival season.

On Thursday (Oct 10), marigold flowers were priced at ₹100 per kilogram due to high demand and good quality, a significant increase compared to last year.

The festive period, beginning from Ganeshotsav and continuing through Navratri to Dussehra, traditionally sees a spike in flower sales. In response, the supply of flowers in the market has risen, with garland sellers actively purchasing marigolds and other popular varieties.

According to flower trader Sagar Bhosale, demand for marigolds, chrysanthemums, asters, and gulchadi has increased significantly this year.

The price of flowers varies based on quality. Marigolds are being sold for ₹50-100 per kilogram, while gulchadi is priced at ₹400-500 per kilogram. Asters, chrysanthemums, and other decorative flowers are also seeing strong demand.

In addition to marigolds, jasmine, mogra, and chameli flowers, commonly used for garlands and religious offerings, are fetching premium prices. Jasmine is being sold at ₹1,000-1,300 per kilogram, while mogra and chameli are priced at ₹800 and ₹500-600 per kilogram, respectively.

Meanwhile, Apta leaves, which hold special significance during Dussehra, are also being sold at high prices in the market, with bundles priced between ₹20 and ₹50.

Farmers and sellers from Bhor and Velha have been supplying Apta leaves in bulk, with daily sales reaching up to 2,000 bundles.

Arun Veer, president of the All Pune Flower Market Traders Association, noted that marigolds remain the most sought-after flower for Dussehra.

"The supply of marigolds is strong this year, and prices are favorable for farmers. We expect flower demand to rise even further on Friday and Saturday, which could result in a slight price increase," he said.
