EY CA Death: Labour Ministry Launches Investigation, Yerawada Police Register AD Report

Union Minister of State for Labour, Shobha Karandlaje, announced the inquiry on social media, assuring that justice would be served in the case.

Pune: The Union Ministry of Labour has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 26-year-old Chartered Accountant, Anna Sebastian Perayil, working at Ernst & Young (EY) India’s Pune office. Yerawada police have also registered an accidental death report in this case.

Anna, who joined EY on March 18, 2024, tragically died on July 20. The news of her passing has raised serious concerns regarding the company's work environment after an email from Ana's mother to the EY India leadership became viral on social media.

The email has sparked widespread discussion about the pressures faced by employees in multinational corporations, especially in demanding roles.

Union Minister of State for Labour, Shobha Karandlaje, announced the inquiry on social media, assuring that justice would be served in the case.

This announcement came after Rajeev Chandrasekhar, former Union Minister of State for Information Technology, expressed his sorrow over the incident and urged for an investigation into the matter. Minister Karandlaje responded by pledging a thorough investigation.

Questions Raised About EY’s Work Practices Anna was employed in the audit department of S.R. Batliboi, an EY Global member firm. EY India released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Anna's untimely death, stating that her sudden passing represents an immense and irreparable loss.

The company emphasized that they are extending full cooperation to Anna's family and are seriously addressing the concerns raised by them.

The company also highlighted that the well-being of its employees is of paramount importance, noting that EY India has around 100,000 employees across the country.

This incident has sparked broader conversations about the intense pressures faced by employees in corporate roles and the need for adequate support mechanisms to ensure employee well-being.
