Pune: The reluctance to engage in sexual relations, fear, and misconceptions are leading to marital conflicts soon after marriage, resulting in legal battles. Ignorance, fear, and societal pressure are preventing discussions about sexual relations, causing disputes among couples post-marriage.
Many couples are heading for divorce due to disagreements over sexual relations, with the underlying reasons often hidden when the matter reaches court.
Sunita Jangam, a lawyer practicing in the Family Court, explained that the lack of discussion about sexual relations leads to post-marriage conflicts. Medical treatments and counseling are available for these issues, but they are often overlooked due to shame or ignorance. This secrecy leads to feelings of betrayal and hatred, ultimately resulting in divorce.
Case Study 1:
After marriage, Raghav consistently refused to have sexual relations with his wife Rekha. When she asked for the reason, he stopped communicating.
Rekha requested Raghav to see a doctor, but he refused, claiming he had no issues. This led to continuous arguments, and eventually, Rekha decided to file for divorce.
Raghav then admitted that he was not capable of having sexual relations and had hidden this out of fear of family and society. The couple mutually agreed to divorce.
Case Study 2:
Ashlesha had been subjected to obscene acts by someone from her neighborhood during her childhood, which instilled a fear of sexual relations in her. This fear persisted after marriage, preventing her from establishing relations.
When her husband realized this, he arranged for her counseling with specialists. Over time, her fear diminished, and their marriage remained intact.
Dr. Sagar Pathak, Gynecologist, Advisor on Family and Intimacy Issues said, "Lack of self-confidence regarding physical capability, ignorance about proper sexual activity, and fear of relations are major reasons for avoiding sexual relations.
Other reasons include same-sex attraction, decreased physical capacity due to illness, fear stemming from previous bad experiences, lack of knowledge about how to engage in sexual activity, and excessive attraction to pornography.
The absence of open discussions before marriage or proper counseling leads to disputes after marriage. Understanding the exact reason and addressing it is essential."
