Flood Alert for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad: Heavy Rains Prompt Massive Water Release from Dams

Pune: The catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Pavana, Mulshi, and Chasakman dams in Pune district are experiencing heavy rainfall, causing these dams to fill to capacity and necessitate significant water releases.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has instructed officials to ensure the safety of residents in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas near rivers' flood lines.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for heavy rainfall in Pune and Satara districts. Due to substantial rainfall in the catchment areas, Khadakwasla Dam is releasing water at 27,016 cusecs, Mulshi at 27,609 cusecs, Pavana at 5,000 cusecs, and Chasakman at 8,050 cusecs. If heavy rains persist, the rate of water release may increase.

Warnings have been issued to residents of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding low-lying areas near the rivers' flood lines.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reviewed the heavy rainfall and flood situation and discussed it with the Pune Divisional Commissioner, Pune District Collector, and the municipal commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

He directed the administration to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of lives and property. Instructions were also given to stay in contact with the NDRF for assistance if needed.

Residents near the rivers' flood lines and low-lying areas in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding regions have been advised to seek safe shelter. Local administration has been instructed to arrange safe shelters and provide full assistance.
