Ganeshkhind Road: Pedestrians and Commuters Suffer Due to Potholes and Dust

Salil Urunkar

Pune: The condition of Ganeshkhind Road in Shivajinagar has become a serious concern for commuters due to numerous potholes, which have led to loose gravel scattering across the road. This, coupled with increasing dust levels, has made driving extremely challenging.

The stretch between Cosmos Bank and Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk is in a particularly dire state, with potholes causing multiple accidents as two-wheelers skid and stall after hitting them. The resulting traffic congestion extends for up to two kilometers, causing significant delays for travelers.

For months, local residents and commuters have been grappling with these issues, but their complaints have been largely ignored by the authorities.

The poor road conditions have not only led to traffic jams but have also caused health issues for drivers and passengers due to the dust. Pedestrians are also at risk, as there is no usable sidewalk along the route, forcing them to walk through mud and debris.

Local residents, including Suhas Angal, have voiced their frustration, stating that the administration’s neglect is unacceptable. The road conditions have also negatively impacted businesses in the area, with the residents of Angalwadi suffering the most.

The situation has prompted demands for immediate repairs to the road and the completion of sidewalk construction.

The President of the Chatuhshrungi Citizens Action Committee, Sanjay Jadhav, has called for the immediate deployment of traffic police at critical points on the road and suggested the introduction of small buses to ease the congestion.

Meanwhile, the Chief Engineer of the PMC's Road Department, Aniruddha Pawaskar, acknowledged that the ongoing Metro work has contributed to the road’s deterioration and assured that steps would be taken to expedite the sidewalk construction.
