Pune: The controversy surrounding the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics has deepened with the unexpected resignation of Chancellor Dr. Bibek Debroy.

His resignation comes after his controversial decision to annul the appointment of the institute’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ajit Ranade, citing non-compliance with University Grants Commission (UGC) norms.

Dr. Debroy, who was appointed Chancellor on July 5, initiated an inquiry after complaints surfaced about Dr. Ranade's appointment. The complaints alleged that Dr. Ranade did not meet the UGC’s prescribed criteria for the post of Vice-Chancellor.

Acting on the recommendations of the inquiry committee he had formed, Dr. Debroy decided to cancel Dr. Ranade's appointment. The decision led to widespread debate in academic and research circles, sparking a renewed conversation about UGC norms and the current state of higher education in India.

However, Dr. Ranade did not take the decision lightly and challenged it in the High Court. The court issued a stay on the cancellation until October 7, giving temporary relief to Dr. Ranade.

The legal battle was ongoing when Dr. Debroy’s sudden resignation was made public, leaving many to speculate about the future direction of the case.

The Gokhale Institute has confirmed the resignation, but the exact reasons for Dr. Debroy stepping down have not been revealed. The institute's administration has refused to comment on the issue, leaving many questions unanswered.

With Dr. Debroy’s resignation, uncertainty looms over the status of the actions taken against Dr. Ranade. Dr. Debroy had been instrumental in the inquiry that led to the annulment of Dr. Ranade's appointment. His departure raises questions about whether the process will continue or if the matter will be re-evaluated.
