Government ITIs Renamed After Social Reformers and Notable Personalities

Institutions will bear names of individuals who have left a lasting impact on society through their work in social reform, education, and advocacy for marginalized communities.

Pune: Honoring the contributions of social reformers and notable figures in the social sector, the Maharashtra government has decided to rename 14 of its Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. 

The decision was finalized in a cabinet meeting, and these institutions will now bear the names of individuals who have left a lasting impact on society through their work in social reform, education, and advocacy for marginalized communities.

The ITI in Mukhed will be named after Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar, a revered queen known for her administrative acumen and contribution to public welfare. 

The Mumbai ITI will now be named after Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the principal architect of India's Constitution and a towering figure in the fight for social justice and equality.

In keeping with the legacy of other great reformers, the ITI in Yeola will be renamed after Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, the pioneer of women’s education and the anti-caste movement. 

The ITI in Jawhar will honor Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a tribal freedom fighter and social reformer. Kolhapur’s ITI will be named after Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, known for his progressive policies, particularly in the field of education for the underprivileged.

Additional institutions will also be renamed: The ITI in Amravati will be named after Sant Gadge Baba, who is remembered for his work in spreading awareness about cleanliness and social welfare. 

Sangli’s ITI will honor Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe, a Dalit writer and poet whose works highlighted the struggles of marginalized communities. Jalgaon’s ITI will bear the name of poetess Bahinabai Chaudhari, whose literary contributions remain significant in Marathi literature.

Furthermore, the ITI in Arvi will now be known as Dattopant Thengadi ITI, in honor of the founder of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh and a key figure in India’s labor movement. 

Belapur’s ITI will be named after D. V. Patil, Kurla’s ITI after Maharana Pratap, a symbol of resistance and valor, and the ITI in Bhum (Dharashiv) will be named after Acharya Vidyasagarji Maharaj, a prominent Jain monk.

Lastly, the ITI in Thane will now bear the name of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe, a respected political figure in Maharashtra, while the ITI in Beed will be named after the late Vinayakrao Mete, a leader dedicated to the welfare of the Maratha community.

Officials stated that the renaming process will be completed in the coming weeks, and new signages will be installed at these institutions.
