Salil Urunkar

Pune: The water stock in the Khadakwasla Cluster - comprising of Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla dam - is at critically low level as of June 12. Only 4.08 TMC of water is remaining in the four dams of the Khadakwasla cluster.

This current water storage represents just 14.01 per cent of the total capacity of the cluster. Compared to the same date last year, this is 1.4 TMC lower. On this date last year, the Khadakwasla cluster had 5.48 TMC of water, accounting for 18.78 per cent of its capacity. This year, the water level has decreased by 4.77 percentage points compared to last year.

The Khadakwasla cluster includes four dams like Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla dams, with a combined total useful water storage capacity of 29.15 TMC. Currently, only 4.08 TMC remains in them.

Pune district has a total of 32 dams. It includes four dams of the Tata Group. Major dams in the district include Ujani, Bhama Askhed, Manikdoh, Chas Kaman, Pavana, Mulshi, Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, Gunjavani, Neera Devdhar, Bhatghar, and Veer. The combined total useful water storage capacity of all these dams is 198.34 TMC.

Pune city received heavy rains in last few days, however not much rain activity happened in the catchment areas of the Khadakwasla cluster. On an average, Pune city consumes 1 TMC water per month for drinking purpose. If the dam levels do not rise by July month, Pune City will have to face sharp cuts in its water supply.

Although the Southwest Monsoon arrived in Pune on June 9, two days early than the expected onset date, the monsoon rain activity is expected to pick up only after June 18. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials have forecasted above normal Monsoon for Maharashtra this year.
