Pune: The Pune District Hospital in Old Sangvi is facing severe issues due to roof leaks, with rainwater seeping into the pharmacy department, medicine distribution center, and other sections.
This has resulted in medicines being damaged and discarded, causing significant hardship for both staff and patients.
Patients from across the district and city come to the Pune District Hospital for treatment. Despite the high number of outpatients and admitted patients, the hospital's facilities are inadequate, and the building is plagued by leaks. This situation is severely impacting patient care, suggesting neglect by the state government.
Pharmacy Department in Disrepair
Medicines are supplied from the district hospital’s pharmacy department to sub-district and rural hospitals. These medicines require storage at specific temperatures and in well-ventilated areas, but the current state of the pharmacy department is dire.
Rainwater leaks through the walls and roof, leading to mold growth and spoiling the medicine stock. This issue has persisted for years, forcing the hospital to discard valuable medicines.
Leaking Shed Compounds Problems
The medicine distribution center, housed in a shed funded by the late MLA Laxman Jagtap, is also facing issues with a leaking metal roof. Rainwater dripping through has caused medicines and patients to get wet, creating chaos. Mold growth due to water leaks in the pharmacy department is further spoiling medicines, leading to their disposal.
Urgent Measures Needed
Sharat Shetty, State Vice President of the International Human Rights Association, emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that spoiled medicines worth lakhs are being discarded due to mold and water damage.
Administrative Response
Nagnath Yampalle, District Surgeon of Pune District Hospital, assured that the medicines in the pharmacy department are taken care of. However, if improper storage is found, serious action will be taken to address the issue.
