Pune: A life convict managed to escape from Yerawada Open Prison, eluding the guards' attention.
The convict, identified as Raju Pandharinath Dusane (43), had been serving a life sentence after being convicted in a murder case in Warje Malwadi.
Dusane, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹5,000 on February 24, 2021, had been transferred to the open prison due to his good behavior.
The escape was discovered during the routine evening roll call when prison guard Avinash Govind Pawar noticed that Dusane was missing. Despite a comprehensive search by prison officials, Dusane could not be located, leading to the filing of a formal complaint with the Yerawada Police.
The police have launched an investigation, with Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Jayabhaye leading the search efforts to locate the fugitive.
In July, a convicted prisoner serving a life sentence had escaped from the open prison in Yerawada. The escaped prisoner, identified as Atmaram alias Atmya Ladkya Bhavar, is currently being sought by the police.
Bhavar is originally from Devipada village in Wada taluka, Palghar district. In 2009, he committed a murder in his hometown, leading to his conviction and sentencing to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 2,000 by the Shahapur Police Station. The court had stipulated an additional six-month imprisonment if the fine was not paid.
Due to his good behavior, Bhavar was transferred to the open prison, where inmates are assigned agricultural work. On Saturday, Bhavar was present in the open prison throughout the day.
