Mumbai: Investigation of Mansukh Hiren death case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday. The state government earlier handed over the probe to the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).

The ATS on Sunday registered an FIR for alleged criminal conspiracy, murder, and attempts to destroy evidence in Mansukh Hiren death case, it said. The case was registered on the complaint of Hiren’s wife Vimla. But on Monday, the central government transferred the case to NIA.

The 48-year-old businessman came into the limelight after his car was abandoned near residence of Reliance Industries’ Head, Mukesh Ambani on February 25. The police found 20 gelatin sticks in it besides a purported threat letter to the Ambani family. After 10 days to the incident, Hiren's body was found in wetlands in Thane Creek near Mumbra town on Friday.

Though in autopsy report, there are reportedly no visible injury marks on Hiren's body, his family and friends have dismissed the 'suicide by drowning' as he was an expert swimmer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Avinash Ambure stated that the autopsy report was shared with the family but declined further details as the investigation is underway. However, Hiren's family accepted his mortal remains on Saturday to perfrom his last rites late. Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP targeted the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government alleging disappointment and demanded that the case be handed over to the NIA.
