Monsoon arrives in Maharashtra, heavy rain forecast for Mumbai

Finally, monsoon is here. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday afternoon announced the arrival of southwest monsoon in Maharashtra with its impact over districts in Solapur and Ratnagiri.

IMD officials stated that the monsoon is expected to hit Mumbai nearly on June 13 and 14. Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are very likely to receive thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds with a speed of 30 to 40 kmph. Between June 12 and 14, the weather department has forecast widespread rainfall across Maharashtra. It has forecast heavy rain at isolated places for Mumbai for Saturday while delivering an orange alert for Sunday with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places.

Usually, the monsoon arrives in Maharashtra via the Southern Konkan belt on June 8 but after a delay of three days, it has finally shown its presence of arrival on Thursday.  The 2020 monsoon has already covered in Karnataka, Goa, Rayalaseema and the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

This time the monsoon has shown its first appearance presence in Harne area located in Ratnagiri, as well as in Solapur area in Maharashtra.

The monsoon advanced in some parts of Central Arabian Sea, including some part of Konkan, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada region. The low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal which has become a bit favourable for the monsoon season. The strong winds have been observed on Thursday and have made progress in the coastal part of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, South Odisha and at the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD has further predicted and observed that if the monsoon progress in a similar way, the monsoon will strike from Northeast and head towards Arunachal Pradesh, Assam covering Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
