Pune: A young woman who was gang-raped at Bopdev Ghat in Pune under the threat of a sickle will receive a compensation of five lakh rupees through the 'Manodhairya' scheme.

The Pune District Legal Services Authority swiftly approved her application within nine days, providing relief to the victim.

The incident occurred on the night of October 3 in the Table Point area of Kondhwa when the young woman and her friend went for a walk. The accused threatened them with a sickle and committed the crime.

The police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case and are actively searching for a third suspect.

The victim applied for compensation under the 'Manodhairya' scheme, which is aimed at rehabilitating women and children who have suffered assault.

Given the severity of the crime, the Legal Services Authority expedited the verification process and approved the compensation. Of the five lakh rupees, 25% will be provided in cash, and the remaining 75% will be placed in a fixed deposit for ten years in her name.

The interest earned from this deposit will support her ongoing medical treatment and daily expenses.

The 'Manodhairya' scheme was introduced to provide support to assault victims and help them recover from trauma. It offers compensation ranging from 30,000 to 10 lakh rupees, ensuring immediate financial aid and support to prevent further exploitation of the victims.

Sonal Patil, Secretary of the Pune District Legal Services Authority, stated that their priority was to approve the compensation as swiftly as possible, guided by Principal District Judge Mahendra Mahajan.

The victim’s application, submitted on October 11, was resolved by October 19, demonstrating the authority’s commitment to maintaining a zero-pendency policy.
