Pune: The Marathi Language University in Riddhapur, Amravati, has taken a significant step towards becoming operational with the appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Avinash Awalgaonkar, and its first Registrar.

Dr. Awalgaonkar, a distinguished scholar and former Head of the Marathi Department at Savitribai Phule Pune University, will serve as Vice-Chancellor for one year or until a permanent appointment is made by the Chancellor.

The establishment of the Marathi Language University fulfills a long-standing demand for a dedicated institution to promote Marathi language and culture. The initiative gained momentum after Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to set up the university in Riddhapur.

A committee of six members, chaired by Dr. Sadanand More, President of the Literary and Cultural Board, was formed to oversee the university's foundation and strategic planning.

Dr. Awalgaonkar’s appointment is seen as a pivotal move in advancing the university’s mission. He brings with him a wealth of experience, including authoring numerous books and serving as a respected academic leader.

Dr. Awalgaonkar expressed his gratitude and outlined his immediate priorities. "I am honored to be appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the Marathi Language University.

My focus will be on setting up the Management Council, academic boards, and developing a comprehensive curriculum. These processes are essential, and once completed, we will be ready to launch the university's courses," he said.

He emphasized that the university will align with the National Education Policy by designing interdisciplinary and employability-oriented courses. This approach aims to provide students with a diverse educational experience that meets modern academic and professional standards.

The Registrar of the university, appointed from the Higher Education Department's Amravati Division, will work closely with Dr. Awalgaonkar to establish administrative frameworks and ensure the smooth initiation of academic activities.

The duo's leadership is expected to expedite the operational readiness of the university, bringing closer the day when students can begin their studies in programs specifically tailored to the promotion and advancement of the Marathi language.
