Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced plans to install 28 speed detection cameras along the city's coastal road. This initiative aims to enforce speed limits and curb traffic violations. The project will be executed by L&T Company and is set to be completed by the end of December.

The coastal road project extends from the Princess Street Flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The development has been rolled out in phases.

The stretch from Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk (Worli) to Marine Drive was inaugurated on March 11, 2024; the section from Marine Drive to Haji Ali was opened on June 10, and the segment from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road began operations on July 11.

Recently, on September 13, the southbound lane connecting to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was made operational, facilitating direct travel between Princess Street and Bandra.

The speed limits on the coastal road are set at 80 km/h, with a reduced limit of 60 km/h in tunnels. Although speed limit signs are in place, the current system only includes CCTV cameras that monitor vehicle movement at intervals of 50 to 100 meters in the tunnels.

The enforcement system for speed violations and lane cutting is not yet in place. The installation of speed detection cameras is essential for activating the enforcement system.

To address this, 28 speed detection cameras will be installed along various points of the road, including near tunnel entrances and other key locations.

These cameras will capture images of vehicles exceeding speed limits and send data to traffic police for issuing e-challans. The cameras will also help in enforcing rules against lane cutting and driving in the wrong direction.

The proposal for the installation of these cameras is currently under review by the BMC's accounts department and will be submitted to the Municipal Commissioner for final approval. Once approved, the cameras will be installed within two to three months and will be connected to the traffic police control room.
