Air travel becomes expensive: Domestic flight ticket prices set to rise

The domestic flights in the country have a cap on fares with both an upper and lower limit.

New Delhi: Now after petrol, diesel prices touching the sky, flight tickets in India will take-off to the new increased prices. Civil Aviation Ministry on Thursday has made hik in the lower and upper limits on domestic airfares by 10 to 30 per cent. The ministry extended the cap on airfare till 31 March. The domestic flights in the country have a cap on fares with both an upper and lower limit.

The aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed lower and upper limits of Rs 2,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively on flights with less than 40-minute duration which is termed as 'Class A'. These have been revised to Rs 2,200 on the lower side and Rs 7,800 for the upper limit.

For 40-60 minutes flight duration which falls in 'Class B', the earlier price range was set in the range of Rs 2,500 and Rs 7,500, for 60-90 minutes which has now been revised to Rs 2,800 and Rs 9,800. The lower limit of Rs 3,000 and higher limit of Rs 9,000. For those 90-120 minutes duration are categorised to 'Class C' route now stands at Rs 3,300 and Rs 11,700.

Acccording to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the cap on the number of domestic flights that Indian airlines were allowed to function will remain at 80 per cent of their pre-COVID levels till 31 March or till the summer schedule starts. The Ministry's order read: "As per the prevailing situation of COVID-19, the central government...directs the order dated 3 December, 2020, shall remain in force till 2359 hrs on 31 March, 2021 or till the date of commencement of summer schedule 2021, whichever is earlier or until further orders."

The ministry had resumed scheduled domestic passenger services from May last year after a gap of two months amid COVID-19 crisis.
