Just after six days of Cyclone Nivar making its landfall in southern states of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday stated that another cyclone is brewing in the Bay of Bengal. The Cyclone Burevi is likely to affect Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The weather department said that the cyclone will cross the Sri Lanka coast on Wednesday and bring heavy rain over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. IMD has also warned fishermen to come out of the sea by Monday.

The depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to strengthen into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and into a cyclonic storm during 24 hours. IMD said, "It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the Sri Lanka coast during evening or night of 2nd December.” The cyclone is very like to move nearly westwards thereafter and emerge into Comorin area on December 3, it added. Once it reaches strength, it will be called 'Burevi'.

‘Burevi’ as per the naming guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) is set by the Maldives. Unlike Cyclone Nivar, Burevi may not turn into a very severe cyclone as the Bay of Bengal does not have the energy to feed the system further. However, the system is likely to reach a maximum intensity of 60-70 kmph increasing to 80 kmph leading to very heavy rains across southern Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

After Amphan, Nisarga, Gati and Nivar, Burevi will be the fifth cyclone over the North Indian Ocean this year. It is predicted to be the least destructive of all if the forecasts hold true.

HEAVY RAINFALL

Under the effect of the potential cyclone, widespread rainfall is predicted across Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, South Andhra Pradesh and Kerala between Tuesday and Friday with a probability of isolated extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.
