Navy Day 2020: Know about Operation Trident which took place on intervening night of December 4, 1971

The day celebrates the forte and courage of the Indian Navy men who brought win to India in 1971 Indo-Pak War.

Every year, December 4 is observed as Navy Day in India. The Indian Navy is a three-dimensional force, skilled of functioning above, on and under the surface of the oceans and protect our national interests. Its aim is also to improve its circumstances in the Indian Ocean Zone.

The day celebrates the forte and courage of the Indian Navy men who brought win to India in 1971 Indo-Pak War.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED

On December 3, 1971, the attack by neighbouring rivals on India's airfields along the border areas resulted to the second war between the two countries. The Indian Navy conducted the operation on the intervening night of December 4 and 5, imposing heavy damage on Pakistani vessels.

OPERATION TRIDENT

Operation Trident was launched by India and the lethal attack by the Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels and totally demolished fuel fields in Karachi. In this attack, as many as 500 Pakistani navy men were killed. Indian Navy's three warships -- INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer played a significant role in the attack.

The 90-minute long Operation Trident started on December 4, 1971. In afternoon, the marine of Indian Navy sailed towards Pakistani waters from Okha Port in Gujarat. Our brave men reached about 70 miles south of Karachi when the Indian Navy fleet grasped that vessel from Pakistan was closing in. The attack lasted for more than an hour. India fired total six missiles. Not only the Indian Navy fleet sank four vessels of the arch rival but also returned without the loss of a single man.

With no casualties in the Indian Navy, this operation is known to be one of the most successful in modern naval history after-World War II.

DECEMBER 4

To mark the glorious show of courage, the Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 every year.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted ,“On Navy Day, my greetings to our Navy personnel, veterans and their families. Nation is proud of your commitment in protecting our maritime frontiers, securing our trade routes, and providing assistance in times of civil emergencies. May you ever rule the waters. Jai Hind!”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wrote: "Navy Day greetings to all our valorous navy personnel and their families. The Indian navy fearlessly protects our coasts and also renders humanitarian assistance in times of need. We also remember India's rich maritime tradition over centuries."
