Kolhapur, the city renowned for its sports culture, celebrates a historic moment as Swapnil Kusale brings home an Olympic bronze medal after a long wait of 72 years.

In recognition of his achievement, Kusale’s name will be engraved on the revered sports pillar at the historic Bhavani Mandap, with the unveiling ceremony scheduled for today (August 21).

Ahead of the ceremony, a grand reception will take place at Tararani Chowk, where Swapnil will be welcomed with a procession leading to Dasara Chowk.

The district administration will honor him with a 1.5 kg silver mace, a Kolhapuri turban, a shawl, and a citation, celebrating his contribution to the city's sports legacy.

This honor places Swapnil among an elite group of six athletes whose names are already inscribed on the Bhavani Mandap sports pillar.

This pillar, first unveiled in 1960 by Maharaja Sir Yadavindra Singh of Patiala, also bears the name of Olympic medalist Khashaba Jadhav, making Swapnil’s achievement particularly significant after more than seven decades.

The ceremony will be attended by prominent figures, including Guardian Minister Hasan Mushrif and Olympians Virdhawal Khade and Tejaswini Sawant, along with other dignitaries.

A helicopter will shower flowers on Swapnil as he arrives at Tararani Chowk and Dasara Chowk, where he will be presented with a specially crafted silver mace.

The entire city has been decorated for the occasion, with students lining the streets to show their support. Some schools have even rescheduled exams to allow students to participate in the welcome event.
