Pune: A significant act of organ donation has saved four lives, following the decision of a grieving father to donate the organs of his nine-year-old son, who was declared brain-dead three days ago at Sadhu Vaswani Mission's Medical Complex, Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital. This was the first multi-organ and tissue donation conducted by the hospital on July 9.

The nine-year-old boy, who had been undergoing regular treatment for mild colloid cyst-induced hydrocephalus, was admitted to the hospital on July 3rd with severe headaches and vomiting.

Despite surgical intervention, his condition deteriorated, and he was declared brain-dead on the night of July 8, according to Dr. Ria Ahuja, the medical superintendent of Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital.

Following counseling sessions with the boy's father and uncle, they agreed to donate his organs. As a result, one kidney was sent to Jupiter Lifeline Hospital, and the other kidney, along with the pancreas, was transplanted to a patient at Sahyadri Specialty Hospital in Pune's Deccan area.

The boy's lungs were sent to Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research Center for transplantation, as reported by Arti Gokhale, the central coordinator of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC).

Gokhale also highlighted that July has been declared Organ Donation Awareness Month by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

The Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA) was enacted on July 8th to regulate the removal, storage, and transplantation of human organs for therapeutic purposes.
