Pune: If you are not SET or NET qualified but wish to pursue a Ph.D., this year's Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) may be your last chance. The university has announced the PET exam, with the application process now open. The exam is scheduled for August 24.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had decided that Ph.D. admissions should be based on NET scores.

However, considering the timing of the decision and the university's preparation for PET, SPPU sought guidance from UGC on whether to conduct Ph.D. admissions through PET for the academic year 2024-25.

Many students who are not SET-NET qualified but wish to pursue a Ph.D. were concerned by the UGC decision, leading to demands for the university to conduct the PET exam one last time. SPPU has now announced the PET exam for Ph.D. admissions.

The application process for PET started online on Wednesday, July 10, and will be open until August 10. The exam will be out of 100 marks, with 50 marks for research methodology and 50 marks for the subject-specific section.

The exam will be multiple-choice, and there will be no negative marking for incorrect answers. After the exam, interviews will determine final admission, with 70 per cent weightage given to the PET exam and 30 per cent to the interview.

Important details include:

  • The exam duration is 90 minutes.

  • Passing marks are 50 for the general category and 45 for reserved categories.
