Pimpri-Chinchwad: Bhama-Askhed Water Supply Project Nearing Completion

Shivraj Sanas

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced significant progress in various projects under the Bhama-Askhed Dam water supply scheme.

The municipal body claims that critical infrastructure, including the construction of a raw water pumping station, a 7.5 km rising main pipeline, and a break pressure tank, is moving forward at a rapid pace.

Once completed, the scheme will ensure a consistent and ample water supply for the city’s growing population.

According to the PCMC, 65% of the work on the raw water pumping station at Vakitarfe Wada has been completed. This station is expected to provide 167 million liters of water daily.

A key component of the project is the 1,700 mm diameter, 7.5 km long rising main pipeline, of which 2.80 km has already been laid. The pipeline will carry raw water from the Bhama-Askhed dam to a planned break pressure tank at Talegaon.

The construction of the tank is set to begin soon, as preliminary works such as soil testing, design, and structural planning have already been completed.

Once the water reaches Talegaon, a 1,400 mm diameter, 18.80 km pipeline will transport it to the Chikhli water purification plant. Out of this, 8.40 km of pipeline has already been installed.

The purification plant, currently under construction, will have a capacity of 200 MLD and will process 167 million liters of water daily from the dam. PCMC officials stated that the plant's hydraulic systems and design plans are under review, and construction is expected to progress rapidly.

PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh has assured the public that all projects under the Bhama-Askhed water supply scheme are on track to be completed within the scheduled time frame.

“We are committed to ensuring that citizens receive an abundant supply of water. The project is progressing swiftly, and we will meet the water needs of the entire PCMC area,” said Singh.
