Pimpri-Chinchwad Blue Flood Zone Constructions Face Demolition

Salil Urunkar

Pune: In response to recent flooding from the Pavana, Indrayani, and Mula rivers, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has begun a survey of unauthorized constructions within the designated blue flood zone.

The survey is slated to be completed within eight days, after which demolition of the identified structures will be carried out under police supervision.

A meeting was held between Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh and Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choubey to discuss the planning of actions against constructions within the flood zone.

Joint Police Commissioner Dr. Shashikant Mahawarkar, Municipal City Engineer Makarand Nikam, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Lonkar, and Deputy Police Commissioner Swapna Gore were also present at the meeting.

Three rivers flow through Pimpri-Chinchwad city: Pavana, Indrayani, and Mula. The length of the Pavana river within municipal limits is 24.34 kilometers, Indrayani river is 20.85 kilometers long, and the Mula river flows for 10 kilometers along the city's border.

The blue flood line has been established based on the average flood levels of these rivers. No construction is allowed within this flood zone. However, it has been observed that several unauthorized constructions have been erected along the banks of all three rivers within the flood zone.

The rise in water levels due to urban rainfall and the discharge from dams often leads to flooding of riverside areas. This year, over 5,000 residents had to be relocated due to floodwaters entering their homes.

In this context, the municipal corporation has undertaken a survey of constructions within the blue flood zone, which is to be completed within eight days.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh stated that the survey would be completed within eight days, after which action would be taken against the constructions under police protection.
