Pimpri-Chinchwad: Over 2000 Potholes Identified, 423 Still Unfilled

Neelam Karale

Pune: Continuous rainfall over the past four days has severely damaged internal roads in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, creating numerous potholes. The municipal administration reports that out of the 2,003 potholes identified, 1,580 have been filled, leaving 423 still unfilled.

The rain, which began at the end of June, has caused extensive damage to roads in areas such as Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi, Bhosari, New Sangvi, Old Sangvi, Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale, Thergaon, Chikhli, and Akurdi.

Initial assessments found 2,003 potholes, with 1,639 detected by July 13 and an additional 364 identified by July 22. The municipal administration claims that 1,580 potholes have been filled using various materials, but 423 remain.

Motorists Face Challenges

Accumulated water in the potholes makes it difficult for motorists to judge their depth, leading to vehicle damage and accidents. Loose gravel from the potholes causes two-wheelers to skid, resulting in accidents and forcing riders to navigate carefully, slowing down traffic.

The city's roads, plagued with potholes, have led to numerous accidents. Former corporator Amit Gawde criticized the municipal administration for failing to fill the potholes before the monsoon and demanded immediate action.

Municipal Engineer Makarand Nikam explained that asphalting is not possible during the rain, so potholes are temporarily filled with soil, gravel, and cement concrete. After the monsoon, all potholes will be refilled with asphalt.

Motorist Nitin Gawde expressed frustration, stating that every year during the monsoon, local representatives and officials blame each other for the potholes. He called for accountability from the engineers who design the roads to the contractors who build them.
