Pimpri Police Arrest Driver Involved in Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Case

Pune: Pimpri police arrested the car driver involved in the hit-and-run case in which a 56-year-old woman pedestrian was injured. The incident had occurred on Sunday (July 21) afternoon on Pimple-Saudagar road near Pimpri Gaon.

The suspect driver has been identified as Harish Jalindar Waghmare (20). Harish and his car was tracked with the help of CCTV camera footage gathered and analyzed by Pimpri police.

The 56-year-old woman, identified as Vijaya Kumar Nayar is a teacher by profession. She was walking near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue Square towards Mahalaxmi Temple on Pimple Saudagar Road. At around 1.15pm, a white car driven by Waghmare suddenly hit her.

Vijaya sustained serious injuries to her head. Local residents rushed Nayar to Jijamata Hospital for initial treatment before she was transferred to a private hospital for further care. Meanwhile, Waghmare, the driver of the car, did not stop to help the injured victim and continued driving without stopping.

In the CCTV footage, it can be seen, that Waghmare tried to avoid collision with a two-wheeler coming from opposite side. In this attempt, he turned his car suddenly towards left side where Vijaya was standing.

The sudden impact was such that Vijaya was thrown in the air and fell on two-wheeler parked on the road, sustaining injuries to her head.

Waghmare's car also collided with a rickshaw and a two-wheeler before the driver fled the scene. Based on CCTV footage, police identified and arrested Waghmare.

Sharanya Saurabh Tiwari (31), daughter of Vijaya Nayar, has filed the complaint that led to the case being registered under various sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act.

Senior Police Inspector Ashok Kadlag stated, "Upon receiving information about the incident, Pimpri police immediately responded and dispatched teams to apprehend the driver. The case has been registered, and the driver is in custody."
