Pimpri to Nigdi Metro Expansion Forces Demolition of PMPML Terminal Platforms

Shivraj Sanas

Pune MahaMetro's extension project from Nigdi to Pimpri has necessitated the demolition of two platforms at the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Terminal in Nigdi. This decision comes as part of efforts to clear the way for constructing a new metro station at Bhakti-Shakti Samuh Shilpa Chowk.

Pimpri-Chinchwad is currently served by a metro line running 7.5 kilometers from Dapodi to Pimpri. However, with the ongoing expansion of the Swargate-Pimpri metro corridor to Nigdi’s Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, significant construction is underway, including the erection of the first pillar in Nigdi.

As part of the work, safety barriers have been installed, trees that pose obstructions are being cut, and existing lamp posts and traffic signals are being removed.

The Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Terminal, managed by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), is facing partial demolition due to this expansion.

Of the five platforms at the terminal, two are set to be dismantled. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh approved this move in a general meeting, with assurances that the platforms will be rebuilt by MahaMetro once the construction is complete.

Should the metro administration fail to rebuild the platforms, the municipal corporation has stated it will carry out the reconstruction and recover the costs from MahaMetro.

This development has already begun to impact the traffic flow at the terminal, which is a busy hub for PMPML buses heading to Pune and other destinations. The construction work and temporary sheds for metro pillars are causing congestion and delays.

Executive Engineer Bapusaheb Gaikwad emphasized that the municipal corporation has given its permission for the demolition with the condition that the metro authorities will restore the platforms after the station is completed.
