Pune Rural Police have filed charges against a woman and her son for allegedly killing a dog by beating and hanging it in Pirangut area of Pune.

The suspects have been identified as Prabhavati Jagtap and her son Omkar Jagtap. The duo face charges under Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 325 and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA).

The distressing episode occurred in the Pirangut area, where animal rights activist Padmini Stump, who leads the Mission Possible Foundation, filed a complaint with the Pune Rural Police.

Aditya Thackeray had brought attention to the matter on social media three days earlier, prompting a strong response.

PETA India also responded to the incident, calling it “deeply saddening” on platform 'X'. Local activist Padmini Stump, who is coordinating with authorities at Paud Police Station, took possession of the deceased dog’s body, which will be sent for post-mortem examination. PETA India has confirmed its support and communication with Stump.

In a statement to ANI, Stump recounted, “I received a call from a person named Farheen Sheikh, who informed me about the dog’s hanging in Pirangut. The dog's owner allegedly wanted to abandon it and had contacted someone to take it.

However, before that person arrived, the owner killed the dog. A video was also sent as evidence, which we submitted when filing the FIR. The dog suffered severe injuries, reportedly because the owner was moving to a different housing society."
